러시아가 만들어내는 긴장감은 세계 전체에 영향을 주고 있고,
특히나 그 중 제일 미친듯이 날뛰고 있는게 유가(oil prices)입니다.
러시아는 세계 3위 원유 수출국인데, 그러한 러시아가 우크라이나를 침공하려하고 있습니다.
그렇다면 러시아에서 시장으로 유입되는 원유가 급감할 수도 있다는 얘기인데, 지금도 수급 균형을 맞추는데 어려움을 겪고 있는데 더 위험한 상황으로 치닫을 수도 있습니다.
오늘은 '러시아-유가-미국'에 대한 The Economist 기사를 보면서 확인해보겠습니다.
1. The Economist 기사 & 표현 정리
Russia's belligerence also caused a spike in oil prices. A barrel of Brent crude hit close to $97 a barrel, the highest in seven years. Energy markets are hypersensitive to any disruption in oil-and-gas flows from Russia.
In America the White House said it was open to the idea of suspending the fuel tax on petrol until next year. With annual consumer-price inflation in America now at 7.5% the Democrats are looking at myriad ways to ease spiraling household costs.
* belligerence
: the wish to fight or argue. "투쟁성, 호전성"
: the act of starting or fighting a war. "교전, 전쟁"
ex) A vote for Trump is a certain vote for belligerence.
"트럼프를 투표하는 것은 확실히 투쟁을 위한 투표이다."
* a spike in
: a sudden increase in something. "~의 급증"
ex) Netflix was among several companies that saw demand increase as people stuck at home were attracted to financial markets amid a spike in volatility.
"넷플릭스는 변동성이 급증하는 가운데, 집에 틀어박힌 사람들이 금융시장에 몰리면서 수요가 늘어난 몇몇 기업들 중 하나였다."
* hypersensitive
: too easily influenced, changed, or damaged, especially by a physical activity or effect. "과민한"
ex) The Fed is hypersensitive to declines in U.S. stocks.
"연준은 미국 주식 하락에 지나치게 민감하다"
* open to the idea(suggestions)
: ready to hear new ideas. "새로운 아이디어, 제안에 대해 받아들일 준비가 되었다"
ex) The CEO said they are open to the idea of a merger or acquisition.
* myriad
: a countless or extremely great number. "셀 수 없이 많음. 무수히 많은" (명사/형용사 둘다 사용 가능)
ex) Department store stocks are wrestling with myriad supply and related shortages.
"백화점 주식들은 셀수 없이 많은 공급과 관련 숏티지로 허우적거리고 있다"

* Consumer-price inflation (CPI) "소비자물가지수"
2. 표현 관련 글로벌 이슈
유럽 국가들에게는 러시아의 우크라이나 침공이 영 달갑지만은 않습니다.
전쟁이라는 것도 당연히 있어서는 안되는 행위이지만,
일단 당장 유가가 천정부지로 오르고 있고, 더 중요한 것은 천연가스 때문입니다.
러시아산 천연가스는 유럽의 가스 공급량 중 무려 40%를 차지하고 있습니다. 따라서 러시아는 이러한 에너지 불균형을 무기로 삼아 유럽 국가들에게 '러시아-우크라이나' 사이에 참여하지 말라고 협박하고 있는 형태입니다.
러시아는 현재, 우크라이나 내 유럽으로 향하는 러시아 천연가스 파이프라인 캐파를 줄인 상태입니다. 만약 러시아가 이미 감소한 천연가스 수출을 더 줄인다면 유럽 기업들은 천연가스 대체재를 당장 찾아내야 하는 상황에 처해질 수 밖에 없습니다. 또한 이는 유가 상승이라는 악순환의 연결고리로 이어집니다.
그리고 이는 유럽 내의 엄청난 인플레이션으로 이어질 수 있는 상당한 가능성을 야기합니다.
그래서 아까 The Economist에서 나왔던 "Energy markets are hypersensitive to any disruption in oil-and-gas flows from Russia."라고 적혀 있었던 겁니다.
물론, 러시아가 당장 석유제품을 수출을 줄일 수는 없습니다. 러시아 예산의 절반가량이 원유와 천연가스와 연관되어 있기 때문입니다.
상황이 더욱 악화되지 않으면 좋을텐데.. 조금 더 지켜봐야겠습니다.
